Step outside the west gate at One Dominion Drive, point the car south on La Cantera Parkway, and the shopping center you thought you knew has quietly changed tenants. The east side of The Shops at La Cantera has spent the past nine months trading fast-fashion for furniture showrooms, and the food court has traded shaved ice for a James Beard–winning scoop shop. If you live inside the gates, the practical effect is this: your five-minute radius has become the most concentrated home-and-hospitality corridor on the North Side.
The thesis, in one paragraph
The Shops at La Cantera is not adding tenants. It is swapping them. Forever 21 closed in May 2025. Urban Outfitters ended its 16-year La Cantera run in January 2026. Into those footprints are moving three national home-furnishings anchors and a wine-focused restaurant. Read the leases together and a pattern emerges that residents inside The Dominion should care about: the center is repositioning around design, entertaining, and slow shopping, which is exactly the demographic on the other side of the wall.

The furniture pivot
La Cantera is transitioning its east-side tenant mix toward home furnishings and lifestyle brands. The most concrete signal arrived in the state filings. Arhaus is taking over the former Urban Outfitters space, and Herman Miller will split the adjacent Soft Surroundings footprint with Arhaus.
For a Dominion resident who has been ordering an Eames lounge chair from a screen for years, the shift matters. The major announcement is the addition of Alamo City's first Herman Miller store, the brand synonymous with Mid-Century modern design, producing such icons as the Noguchi table, the Marshmallow sofa, and the Eames lounge chair and ottoman. A design decision that once required a trip to Austin or a leap of faith on a website is now a fifteen-minute test-sit.
Crate & Barrel is the largest of the three by square footage. According to a report by The Culture Map, the store is set to open on August 20, 2026, the brand's first in the Alamo City following decades of expansion in North America. The estimated cost at the time of filing was around $5 million. The work covers a tenant fit out for roughly 20,005 square feet. It also includes some exterior facade improvements. Twenty thousand square feet is roughly the interior of five Dominion garden homes; that is the volume of showroom now going in where a single teen-apparel store used to live.
Arhaus rounds out the trio. Ohio's Arhaus specializes in sustainable sofas and tables with an aesthetic similar to Pottery Barn or RH.
The food and wine layer
The furniture pivot is being paired with a hospitality upgrade meant to keep people at the center longer.
Sixty Vines is the most ambitious of the food openings. Sixty Vines plans to open its first Alamo City location on August 10 at The Shops at La Cantera, according to Chief Executive Officer Jeff Carcara. The restaurant's identity is built around a tap program. Each of its 60 selections is served on-tap, a practice the company says saves more than 450,000 bottles each year from winding up in landfills. Pours range from a 2.5-ounce taster to a 750-milliliter carafe, which is a friendlier structure for a Tuesday-night sampling than a full bottle commitment.
The room itself will not look like the other Sixty Vines locations. Guests can expect a glass-enclosed patio with a double-sided bar connecting the indoor dining room and the patio. "We call it a greenhouse," Carcara said. "The room itself will be glass all around it, and that's unique for us to build and unique to San Antonio." For context on the operator, the concept comes from FB Society, which also operates San Antonio favorites like Whiskey Cake, Ida Claire, and the recently opened Haywire.
Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams already opened, and the location is easier to find than the address suggests. The new Jeni's Splendid will scoop out refreshing sweetness from a shop near the American Eagle and Foot Locker stores. If you have driven the kids past that spot for a decade of Bahama Bucks, this is the same kiosk, converted. Hours are worth writing down: Monday through Thursday, 11 am-9 pm; Friday and Saturday, 11 am-10 pm; and Sunday, 11 am-8 pm. The rotating summer flavors currently on the board include hibiscus chili punch, strawberry pretzel pie, watermelon taffy, wildberry lavender, and Savannah buttermint.
For the Rim side of the parkway
The parallel pivot at The Rim, just across Loop 1604, is less about anchor tenants and more about a single, quieter arrival.
Sunny's, the Boerne brunch spot that has become a weekend fixture on the Hill Country Mile, is expanding south. Sunny's, from the owner of San Antonio's Albi's Vite Italian Kitchen, is opening a second restaurant at The Rim this spring. Sunny's debuted at Boerne's 518 River Rd. on June 16, 2025. The concept is similar to national chains like First Watch and Snooze, but the offerings go far beyond the pancakes and Benedicts offered at like-minded restaurants.

- August 8 — Postino The Rim, at 17627 La Cantera Pkwy, Suite 103, is throwing a 25th-anniversary party. "Celebrate 25 years of Postino and the launch of the Postino Pass with the ultimate house party. We're spinning a throwback Y2K playlist and pouring exclusive, limited-edition anniversary wines. Plus, the first 50 guests who show their Postino Pass confirmation email get an exclusive trucker hat."
- August 10 — Sixty Vines opens its greenhouse room at 15900 La Cantera Parkway.
- August 11 — A resident event on the Dominion HOA calendar from 6 to 8 pm, per the association's public listing at dominionhoa.com.
- August 20 — Crate & Barrel opens its first San Antonio location on the east side of the center.
Why this reshuffle matters if you already live here
Retail turnover is common. Retail turnover that swaps four teen-and-fast-fashion boxes for four home-and-lifestyle anchors, inside the same twelve months, is a strategic reposition. The center's own leadership has been open about the curation. In a release announcing the wave of new tenants, senior general manager Brian Schroeder framed it as an ongoing effort to bring first-to-market brands into the mix, and the outside recognition has followed. The growing collection of concepts, which includes TikTok-famous newcomer La La Land Kind Cafe, has made The Shops of La Cantera one of the nation's premier retail destinations. In June, USA Today readers named it the best shopping center in the U.S.
For a household inside The Dominion's 1,600 acres, three practical shifts follow:
- Design decisions collapse into a single afternoon. Herman Miller, Arhaus, and Crate & Barrel sit within a short walk of each other. A furnishings comparison that used to require two cities can happen between lunch and the school pickup line.
- Entertaining logistics improve. A wine-on-tap restaurant with a 60-selection program, a Postino a short drive across the parkway, and Jeni's for a dessert walkaround makes hosting out-of-town guests easier than a downtown loop that ends in Rivercenter parking.
- Property positioning subtly benefits. Buyers evaluating homes inside The Dominion increasingly ask about proximity, not just square footage. "Five minutes from the Herman Miller store and the Sixty Vines patio" is a different sentence in a listing description than the one available a year ago.
None of this changes what makes The Dominion itself distinctive: the manned gates, the Country Club at One Dominion Drive, the hand-carved entry bridge by Jose Luis de la Garza. What it changes is the answer to the question every current resident eventually gets from a visiting friend: where should we go for dinner tonight, and can we walk out with a new sofa?
For the first time, the honest answer is: yes, and without leaving the parkway.
